Art

Colour in Landscape

This essential skills and knowledge project teaches children about colour theory by studying tints, shades and tones. They learn about the features of landscapes before using this knowledge to create landscape paintings. 

Computing

Quizzing, Databases and Gaming

In Year 5, pupils use Purple Mash to develop their digital skills through exciting projects in quizzing, game creation and databases.They learn how to design and build their own quizzes and games, thinking carefully about users, rules and scoring.

Children also explore how databases work by organising, searching and sorting information. These activities help pupils to develop logical thinking, problem-solving and creativity while using technology safely and responsibly.

Moving Mechanisms

This project teaches children about pneumatic systems. They experiment with pneumatics before designing, making and evaluating a pneumatic machine that performs a useful function.

Geography 

Investigating Our World

This essential skills and knowledge project teaches children about locating map features using a range of methods. They learn about the Prime Meridian, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and worldwide time zones and study interconnected climate zones, vegetation belts and biomes. Children learn about human geography and capital cities worldwide before looking at the UK motorway network and settlements. They carry out an enquiry to identify local settlement types.

History

Revolution

Teach children about life in Victorian times developing their knowledge about Victorian culture, including significant people and inventions of the time.

 

 

Music

Livin' On A Prayer

This is a six-week Unit of Work. All the learning is focused around one song: Livin' On A Prayer. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked. As well as learning to sing, play, improvise and compose with this song, children will listen and appraise other classic rock songs.

This is a six-week Unit of Work. All the learning is focused around two tunes and improvising:

Three Note Bossa and Five Note Swing.

MultiSkills

Multiskills develops pupils’ confidence, coordination and teamwork through a wide range of fun, active challenges. Lessons focus on improving fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing and changing direction.

Football

Football lessons focus on developing pupils’ skills, confidence and understanding of the game through fun and inclusive activities. Children practise key techniques such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defending while improving their agility, balance and coordination.

OAA

Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) help pupils develop teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills through exciting physical challenges. Lessons involve cooperative tasks, team games and adventure-style activities that require children to think strategically and work together.

Dance

Pupils explore dance through exciting links to their science topics. They use movement to represent scientific ideas such as life cycles, space, forces, and states of matter. Through creative tasks, children turn their learning into expressive sequences.

PSHEe

Relationships

This term, children will learn about how to manage friendship and peer influence, physical contact and feeling safe, as well as recognising prejudice and discrimination.

RE

Sacred - Muhammad and the Qur'an

In this unit, Year 5 pupils learn about what is sacred in Islam by exploring the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the importance of the Qur’an. They discover why the Qur’an is treated with great respect and how it guides Muslims in their daily lives.

Forces and Mechanisms

This project teaches children about the forces of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, with children exploring their effects. They learn about mechanisms, their uses and how they allow a smaller effort to have a greater effect.

Earth and Space

This project teaches children about our Solar System and its spherical celestial bodies. They describe the movements of the Earth and the other planets relative to the Sun, the Moon relative to Earth, and the Earth's rotation to explain day and night.

SPRING TERM

Art

Line, Light and Shadows

This project teaches children about the visual qualities of line, light and shadow. They explore the work of Pablo Picasso and Rembrandt and are introduced to a range of shading techniques. They take black and white photographs and use pencil, pen and ink wash to reimagine their photographs in a shaded drawing.

Nature's Art

This project teaches children about the genre of land art. They work outdoors to sketch natural forms and explore the sculptural potential of natural materials before working collaboratively to create land art installations.

Eat the Seasons

This project teaches children about the meaning and benefits of seasonal eating, including food preparation and cooking techniques.

Geography

Sow, Grow and Farm

This project teaches children about the features and characteristics of land use in agricultural regions across the world, including a detailed exploration of significant environmental areas.

 

Science

Properties and Change of Materials

This project teaches children about the wider properties of materials and their uses. They learn about mixtures and how they can be separated using sieving, filtration and evaporation. They study reversible and irreversible changes, and use common indicators to identify irreversible changes.

 

 

 

 

SUMMER TERM

Art

Expression

This project teaches children about the Expressionist art movement and the 'Father of Expressionism', Edvard Munch. They explore different ways to portray feelings and emotions in art to create an imaginative self-portrait.

Mixed Media

This project teaches children about paper crafts, papermaking and collage techniques, including paper, fabric, mixed media and photo collage. They use their learning to create a final piece of small-scale, mixed media collage.

This project teaches children about how architectural style and technology has developed over time and then use this knowledge to design a building with specific features.
