AUTUMN TERM

Physical Development 

First PE

In this unit, children will experiment with different ways of moving around a given area, and learn how to negotiate space and to be safe when moving. They will be introduced to basic co-ordination skills with a balloon and ball and also begin balancing objects on their body.

This project teaches children about the environments that they share with others, including their homes, school and places in the local community.

This creative project explores puppets and pop up books and gives children the opportunity to make puppets and use them to tell exciting stories.

 

Physical Development 

Enjoy a ball

In this unit, children will experiment with different ways to move a ball in a game using their hands and feet. Incorporated into this unit are adapted games, which encourage movement, negotiation of space, listening skills, aiming skills, teamwork and fun competition.

Understanding the World 

Religious Education - Christmas

This unit covers experiences of birthdays and babies being born. It considers the similarities and differences of how birth is celebrated in life. There is a focus on Christianity and how Christians celebrate Jesus's birth. It also reflects on the importance of celebrating birth.

Marvellous Machines

This project teaches children about the technology that is part of their daily lives and how machines help us. The project gives children the opportunity to build and create marvellous machines.

SPRING TERM

Physical Development 

Fitness and FUNdamentals

In this unit, children will learn to balance and move in different ways on large and small apparatus.  Incorporated into this unit are adapted games, which encourage movement, negotiation of space, listening skills, teamwork and fun competition linked to people who help us.

Religious Education

Sikhism - Guru Nanak

This unit involves experiences of remembering someone special. It explores when and why we remember someone special and what this means. It also explores Sikhism, focusing on why Sikhs remember Guru Nanak.

Animal Safari

This project teaches children about the animals that live around the world, how to look after animals and the importance of caring for our local and global environments.

Stories and Rhymes

This project teaches children about traditional stories and rhymes and gives them the opportunity to play with words and learn new vocabulary.

Gymnastics

In this unit, children will learn to make different balances using their body parts, move in different ways and make and hold different shapes using their body on large and small apparatus.

Christianity – New Life of Easter

This unit asks children to talk about their experiences of new life and that not all new life is the same. It teaches them about the importance of new life to Christians and their beliefs about Jesus at Easter.

This project teaches children about food and farming and explores themes, including where food comes from, what plants and animals need to grow and survive and what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.

This project teaches children about the changes that happen during the spring, including weather and the festivals that are celebrated at this time of year.

 

 

SUMMER TERM

 
Physical Development 

Tennis

In this unit, children will begin to develop the fundamentals of movement e.g. walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping. They will begin to throw and catch a tennis ball and be introduced to balancing a ball on a racket.

Religious Education

Special clothes

This unit asks children to identify their own special clothes and how it feels to wear them. It explores the importance of special clothes to Sikhs and Christians and why they wear them.

Long Ago

This project teaches children about how they have grown and changed since they were babies and how life in the past was different from today.

Creep, Crawl and Wriggle

This mini project teaches children about invertebrates that live in their gardens and local environment.

 
 
Physical Development 

Athletics

In this unit, children will begin to develop fundamentals of movement e.g. marching, running, jumping, hopping, skipping. They will begin to jump over a variety of objects. They will learn to throw objects into targets. They will also be developing their balancing skills when moving. Children will also be introduced to fun competitions e.g racing against each other.

Christianity – Jesus as the Storyteller

This unit explores what we can learn from stories. It also explores the meaning of learning. Children will begin to understand the significance of the stories Jesus told and their importance to Christians to guide them on how to behave.

This project teaches children about the plants and animals that live at the seaside. It also explores holidays in the past and the importance of keeping safe in the Sun.

This mini project teaches children about the importance of exercise, sleep and a balanced diet, and explores outdoor, summer games and activities.

Moving On

This project celebrates the children’s successes throughout their Reception year. It explores how they have grown and changed and supports them with the changes to come as they move into Year 1.
