PE

Purpose of study

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”

Aims

The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engage in competitive sports and activities

  • lead healthy, active lives

Our Approach

At Foundry Lane, our PE curriculum is designed to develop confident, competent and enthusiastic movers. It is delivered through Primary PE Planning (PPP), supported by bespoke LCP sessions, providing a progressive and varied programme of physical education.

We also draw on the achievements of inspirational sportspeople to motivate our pupils. By learning about athletes who have shown dedication, resilience and fair play, in success and in adversity, children see our school values of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Your Best reflected in real sporting role models, and are encouraged to believe that they too can achieve great things through hard work and perseverance.

The sections below set out our intent for PE at Foundry Lane, how this is implemented in practice, and the impact we expect our curriculum to have on pupils by the time they leave us.

Intent

At Foundry Lane, we want every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to enjoy physical activity and lead a healthy, active life.

Our PE curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ motor competence, their understanding of rules, strategies and tactics, and their knowledge of healthy participation. Children build secure fundamental movement skills before applying these with increasing control, accuracy and independence across a broad range of physical activities.

We aim for children to experience success, challenge themselves, work collaboratively and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity. Through PE, pupils also develop resilience, teamwork, fairness and respect, reflecting our school expectations of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Your Best.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is delivered primarily through Primary PE Planning (PPP), supplemented by bespoke LCP sessions where these enhance our curriculum offer.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills are revisited and developed over time. Children progress from fundamental movement skills in the Early Years and Key Stage 1 towards increasingly complex, sport-specific skills, decision-making and tactical understanding in Key Stage 2.

Teaching is structured around the three key areas of:

Motor Competence
Developing the movement knowledge and skills required to participate successfully in physical activity.

Rules, Strategies and Tactics
Understanding how to participate effectively in games and activities, including making decisions, using space and working with others.

Healthy Participation
Understanding how physical activity affects the body and contributes to physical health, mental wellbeing and an active lifestyle.

Lessons include explicit teaching, modelling, purposeful practice, opportunities to apply learning and opportunities for pupils to evaluate and improve their performance.

Our curriculum is inclusive, with teaching, equipment and activities adapted where necessary so that all children are able to participate and make progress.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, we want pupils to be physically confident, competenet and motivated.

Children will:

  • demonstrate increasingly secure and fluent movement skills

  • apply skills appropriately across different physical activities

  • understand and use rules, strategies and tactics

  • work effectively both independently and as part of a team

  • understand how exercise affects their bodies and wellbeing

  • demonstrate resilience, fairness and respect

  • understand the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle

  • be prepared for the expectations of PE at secondary school.

Teachers assess pupils through observation, questioning and their application of skills during lessons. Assessment information is used to identify pupils who require further support or additional challenge.

Threshold Concepts

Our PE curriculum is built around three threshold concepts, which children revisit throughout their time at Foundry Lane:

Motor Competence

Children develop the movement knowledge and physical skills required to participate successfully in physical activity. This begins with fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching and develops towards increasingly complex and sport-specific movements.

Rules, Strategies and Tactics

Children learn how physical activities and games work. They develop an understanding of rules, teamwork, space, attacking and defending before progressing towards increasingly sophisticated decision-making and tactical understanding.

Healthy Participation

Children learn how to participate safely and understand the relationship between physical activity, fitness, physical health and mental wellbeing. They develop knowledge of warming up, physical exertion and the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle.
