READING:

In Year R and KS1, reading teaching takes place in small groups based on phonics assessments, using the Read, Write, Inc approach. This is to ensure that the texts are accessible and do not include sounds beyond their learning.

In KS2, all pupils in school are assessed using the fluency rubric to assess pupils’ reading fluency skills; intervention and quality first teaching is put in place for those pupils who need to develop this skill.

Across the school, comprehension is taught using the seven ‘reading monsters’. All children are required to become familiar with and apply a different monster each week within their reading lessons.  The texts used for these lessons are carefully chosen and allow the children to access a variety of rich and inspiring, age-appropriate fiction, non-fiction and poetry including a mix of classic texts and modern, diverse literature.

The Reading Monsters are utilised across the school for pupils to practise different skills of reading.

In KS2, lessons are taught sequentially: the first is a discreet fluency teaching lesson.  The 2nd and 3rd lessons introduce the monster for the week.  Children are immersed in the text, with teachers having planned for any vocabulary and background knowledge that requires explicit teaching in order for all children to access the text. Teachers then model answering a question from that domain, before the children have a go at this following the shared, independent format. Children then independently complete differentiated tasks that requires skills within the monster’s domain. The final lesson in the sequence uses the same monster appearing alongside a familiar text: the class novel. The same shared, independent style questions are completed in the taught part of the lesson before children undertake an independent, differentiated task using the monster.

Children’s proficiency within each domain is tested using the termly Cornerstones reading papers to allow staff to adapt planning accordingly for each cohort.

Every year group have reading for pleasure lessons every week, designed to introduce them to new books, inspire them to read more and more broadly, as well as encourage a culture of reading within the classroom.

Class novels and reading for pleasure texts, have been carefully selected by teachers. These are supported by rationales that are reviewed and updated annually.
