At Foundry Lane Primary School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our Civic Award gives every Year 6 pupil the opportunity to develop the skills, character, and confidence they need to become active, responsible members of their community. 

Inspired by the principles of the Junior Duke Award, our Civic Award encourages children to challenge themselves, serve others, and develop a lifelong sense of civic responsibility. Over a minimum of six months, pupils complete a range of personal and community-based challenges that promote independence, resilience, and perseverance. 

The award includes: 

• School Service: making a positive contribution to the daily life of our school community 

• Community Service: volunteering and supporting others beyond the school gates 

• A Sport: committing to regular participation and developing determination, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles 

• A Hobby or New Skill: pursuing a personal interest or learning something new, encouraging curiosity and lifelong learning 

• An Overnight Camp: developing confidence, teamwork, problem-solving, and independence through outdoor experiences 

• A Walk or Expedition: building resilience, navigation skills, and an appreciation of the local environment 

Throughout the programme, pupils record and reflect on their achievements, celebrating the personal growth they experience along the way. The Civic Award encourages children to step outside their comfort zone, embrace challenge, and recognise the positive impact they can have on both their school and the wider community. 

The programme also helps children develop a strong sense of pride in where they come from. By engaging with their local community and contributing through meaningful acts of service, pupils gain a deeper understanding of citizenship, responsibility, and the importance of giving back. 

Successful completion of the award is celebrated at a special presentation ceremony, where pupils receive their Civic Award from the Mayor of Southampton. This memorable occasion recognises the commitment, resilience, and dedication shown by each child throughout the programme. 

Preparing Children for the Future 

The Civic Award is about much more than completing a set of challenges. It equips children with the confidence, independence, and resilience needed for the transition to secondary school and beyond, and it encourages leadership, service, perseverance, and compassion: qualities that will support them throughout their lives. 

At Foundry Lane, we are incredibly proud of the commitment our Year 6 pupils show in achieving this award. It is a fitting celebration of their final year with us and reflects our belief that every child should leave primary school not only with excellent academic foundations, but also with the character, values, and experiences needed to thrive in the future.
