Pupil Leadership and Pupil Voice 

At Foundry Lane Primary School, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to be heard and to play an active role in shaping our school community. We are passionate about developing confident, responsible young people who understand that their opinions matter and that they can make a positive difference. 

Our pupil leadership structure promotes the British Value of democracy, giving children meaningful opportunities to represent their peers, contribute to decision-making, and develop valuable leadership skills. 

School Council 

Our School Council acts as the voice of our pupils and serves as an important link between the children and the Senior Leadership Team. 

Representatives are democratically elected by their classmates and meet weekly to discuss ideas, celebrate successes, and identify areas for development across the school. Meetings provide children with a genuine opportunity to influence school life and ensure that pupil voice remains central to our decision-making. 

School Councillors regularly: 

• Share feedback from their classes on learning, wellbeing, and school life 

• Raise ideas and suggestions from pupils 

• Discuss key themes and priorities across the school 

• Help plan and organise whole-school events and enrichment opportunities 

• Support initiatives such as Pride Week, Children in Need, fundraising events, and community projects 

• Contribute to surveys, including travel and traffic initiatives, helping us promote safe, active, and sustainable journeys to school 

• Meet with visitors to the school and share their experiences of life at Foundry Lane 

• Welcome prospective staff and support recruitment by meeting candidates and contributing to interview processes where appropriate 

Children also get to make real decisions that shape everyday school life, such as voting for their new class names, giving every pupil a genuine stake in the identity of their school. 

By listening to and acting upon the views of our children, we ensure that pupils play an active role in the continuous development of our school. 

House Captains 

Our House Captains are positive role models who demonstrate our Golden Rules, Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Your Best, every day. 

Elected by their peers, House Captains lead by example, encouraging teamwork, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging within their houses. They help organise house events, celebrate achievements, motivate younger pupils, and support whole-school activities throughout the year. 

Through these responsibilities, House Captains develop confidence, communication skills, and a deep understanding of leadership through service. 

Pupil Groups 

Leadership at Foundry Lane takes many forms, and we are proud of the wide range of pupil groups that give children real responsibility within our school community. 

Our Year 6 Prefects carry out important jobs around the school each day, supporting staff, helping younger pupils, and modelling our Golden Rules in everything they do. Our Head Boy and Head Girl represent the whole school at events and take on a visible leadership role among their peers. Eco Champions lead the way in caring for our environment, promoting sustainability, and supporting our Green Flag Eco-School status. Playground Pals support their classmates during break times, helping to include others, resolve friendship difficulties, and ensure that every child feels they have someone to play with. 

Together, these groups give children of all ages the chance to take on responsibility, build confidence, and contribute meaningfully to daily life at Foundry Lane. 

Developing Future Leaders 

Leadership opportunities at Foundry Lane extend far beyond holding a title. We encourage all children to take responsibility, contribute to school life, and recognise that even the smallest actions can have a positive impact on others. 

By giving our pupils authentic opportunities to lead, influence decisions, and work collaboratively with staff, visitors, and the wider community, we nurture confident, compassionate young people who understand the importance of democracy, responsibility, and active citizenship. 

At Foundry Lane, we don't simply listen to pupil voice: we value it, act upon it, and empower our children to help shape the future of their school.
