PE

At Foundry Lane, the intent of our PE curriculum is to deliver a high quality curriculum which is accessible and ambitious to all; it inspires all pupils to excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. It will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports health and fitness. Through the PE curriculum, children will develop lifelong skills such as teamwork, resilience and perseverance. Opportunities to compete and participate in sport and other activities will be provided to reinforce these values.

Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

As part of our PE curriculum, our children complete a 10-hour unit of swimming tuition using qualified swimming teachers.

By the end of KS2 in the last academic year, 73% of pupils were able to swim 25m unaided.
