​​At Foundry Lane, we believe that every child can become a successful mathematician. Our Mathematics curriculum is built on White Rose Maths, providing a carefully sequenced progression that develops conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving. We want every child to leave us with a genuine love and curiosity for maths, alongside the confidence and independence to calculate, reason, and solve problems in a range of contexts.

We recognise that confidence in mathematics begins with secure number fluency. From the earliest stages of learning through to Key Stage 2, we use Number Sense Maths to develop rapid recall, number confidence, and multiplication and division fluency. This ensures children build strong mathematical foundations before applying these skills to increasingly complex concepts.

Our curriculum is deliberately structured to help children make links with prior learning and build on it as they encounter new concepts, developing their ability to justify, explain, and become fluent across all areas of maths. We aim for all children to become creative and critical thinkers by giving them opportunities to notice patterns, make links, and draw connections.

Because a high proportion of our pupils have English as an additional language, are disadvantaged, or have special educational needs and disabilities, we recognise the importance of giving all children access to concrete materials and visual stimuli to support and deepen their understanding. This helps children build resilience, giving them a range of tools and resources to draw on when faced with a challenge. Alongside this, we develop children's mathematical language through carefully written stem sentences, and provide opportunities for them to transfer their mathematical knowledge and skills to life beyond education.

Our curriculum is further enriched through resources and approaches from the NCETM, providing opportunities for mathematical discussion, reasoning, mastery, and challenge. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections, and apply their learning in a range of meaningful contexts.

What Is Fluency?

At Foundry Lane, we recognise the sheer importance of fluency across all areas of maths. We provide children with varied and frequent practice of mathematical concepts, helping them develop their conceptual understanding alongside the ability to recall number facts and apply their knowledge across the maths curriculum. Alongside our teaching of this in discrete maths sessions, we also allocate fifteen minutes a day to our 5-a-Day fluency practice, aimed at "overlearning" already-taught skills and recapping more recently taught concepts.

How Can I Support My Child at Home?

At Foundry Lane, we use Numbots (KS1) and Times Tables Rockstars (KS2) to support children in improving their fluency in number.
