Travel to School

Bike it / Active Travel

Here at Foundry Lane we are committed to promoting active travel to and from school.  We are aiming to reduce congestion and pollution around the roads surrounding our school and the best way to do this is to come to school by cycling or scooting!  We are actively promoting  ‘park and stride’ or ‘park and ride’!

This year we have joined up with ‘Bike it Stuart’ from Sustrans to become a ‘Bike it’ school.

To help meet some targets in our Travel Plan just take a look at all the events we have done!

  • November – ‘Car free week’ – We had a ‘bling up your bike / scooter’ parade in the playground for parents to watch.
  • Bikers breakfast – For those children who cycled or scooted to school, they could make themselves a smoothie using the smoothie bike!
  • February – To coincide with Valentines Day, we had ‘Love your bike and scooter day’, where all the children in school were able to take part in a bike agility course and earn themselves a certificate.
  • March – Bike it Stuart ran 4 sessions of ‘ditch the stabilizers’ for children aged between 4-7 years old.  This was well attended by at least 30 families.
  • March – Scare the cars away  - The whole school took to the streets around the perimeter of the school to demonstrate that 10 MPH is plenty quick enough when driving near our school!
  • April – The Big Pedal – Children were encouraged to ride or scoot into school for a fortnight in order to achieve ‘The Big Pedal’.  We had the Smoothie bike again and Mrs Phillips ran a scooter club at lunchtimes.

And what next….

Eco Council will continue to do a weekly count of the number of bikes and scooters parked in the bike sheds.

The Golden lock competition will continue – every so often the golden lock is placed on a bike or scooter parked in the bike sheds.  If it’s your bike or scooter then you can come to the office, unlock the padlock and choose yourself a prize!

THE BIG SHIFT - 3rd - 7th October - Southampton City Council initiative
We would like to encourage children to ride / scoot to school for the WHOLE  of the week commencing 3rd October.  Don't worry if you can't manage this very day, why not try just for our Bike It Day on Thursday 6th October?
Thursday 6th October - BIKE IT DAY
A 'Bikers Breakfast' will be available to the whole school from 8.20 - 9.00am in the Foundry Lane Playground. The Smoothie bike will be returning and offering breakfast for all children who ride / scoot to school that day. This will be offered on a first come first served basis.
The Bike Doctor  will also be with us all day on 6th October.  They are going to work their way through the whole bike / scooter shed checking the safety of the bikes and scooters.

At lunchtime we will be holding a 'Bike Doctor Workshop' for children who want to drop in and watch the Bike Doctors in action.
We will also be running some 'air pollution' / 'travel safety' sessions during the school day for the children.
Finally we would like to invite you to a Parent Presentation that afternoon.  Our Bike Doctor will be in the playground from 2.45 - 3.30pm.  We'd love you to come along and chat to him about travel,  congestion, air pollution and active travel around school.   He will also be offering discount vouchers for bike facilities etc.
